The Dutch owned trawler, Margiris sailing into Tasmanian waters, by the invitation of the Tasmanian Government has heightened fears from the general Tasmanian community that it will rape our waters of fish. This super trawler is one of the largest in the world and there are fears that the profits will go offshore.
Not everyone is convinced of course that it will deplete our fishing resources, but just the sheer size of it disturbs many, including the coastal fishermen whose livelihood depends on good fish stocks. It is claimed that its venture into our waters is a short term grab-what-you-can plan and may take many generations to recover. The current Labour Government and the Liberal Opposition back the introduction.
The Greens, the Labour Government’s partners oppose the arrival of the trawler, much to Premier Lara Gidding’s concern as she survives only with the Greens support. Tasmania has also seen two bankruptcies take place this week, Gunns Limited who are fully involved with the forestry industry and logging and just two days ago, a Tasmanian vegetable processing company called Premium Fresh, who employs 150 people with 80 farmers largely depended on their continual trading.
The State is in a slow economic decline, but this does not deter Lara to continue with her social aims. I’ve spoken of her push for homosexual marriages previously. Legislation making it law passed the Lower House last week and faces the Upper House this week. There has been much lobbying opposing it. Whether it passes or not in my opinion is irrelevant as any such law is constitutionally illegal. Word has it that two lawyers are working on this very point.
Marriage is a Federal Government matter as laid down within the Australian Constitution. Up to now, Prime Minister, Julia Gillard has opposed homosexual marriages.
Lara continues however. Her extreme left-wing policies are leaving everyone shaking their heads. Now she is proposing with the help of Green Member, Cassy O’Connor (girl friend of Nick McKin who is Education Minister) – and only in Tassie can you find this – and the aboriginal radical group, Tasmanian Aboriginal Council (TAC) headed by Michael Mansell to have duel names i.e. English and Aborigine. The only problem, besides making it confusing, is the language and words being pushed by the TAC are manufactured words and have been manufactured only of late.
They are not based on historical fact. This won’t disturb Lara of course as she drags the State down the sloppy road as long as she gets her own selfish way…now she wants to have a Nominal List for prominent Tasmanian women. One can bet they will all be politically correct and the conservative women who have made it on their own will miss out.
It is some time before there is an election here and in the meantime we all have to suffer from a group of people that one would not employ if one was in small business. This is the dilemma we face. - REG
